With nearly 9,000 construction sheds around New York City, the De Blasio administration recently put additional focus on ensuring these structures are all well-lighted and code compliant. On January 8th, De Blasio announced a ‘shed safety sweep’ wherein inspectors examined more than 300 miles of sheds to ensure code compliance. The DOB reported that the sweep resulted in more than 600 violations.
While not an exhaustive list, be sure that the following conditions are met by your sidewalk sheds:
- Length: Along property line and 20 feet into adjacent properties at buildings higher than 100 feet
- Width: 5-foot minimum and sufficient for foot traffic
- Egress: Fire escapes/exits may not be blocked
- Street Signs: DOT street signs should remain visible to pedestrians and drivers
- Lighting: Passageway must be lit at all times
