With the holiday season behind us, it's time to dispose of your Christmas tree. New York City offers several options for both real and artificial trees.
Real Trees:
The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will conduct special collections for real Christmas trees from Tuesday, January 3, 2016, through Saturday, January 28, 2017 (weather permitting). Simply place your clean, undecorated tree at the curb. DSNY will collect the trees, chip them, mix them with leaves, and recycle them into compost for city parks, institutions, and community gardens. Trees that are not clean (i.e., those with decorations or tinsel) will be collected as garbage.
Artificial Trees:
Artificial trees can be recycled. Remove all decorations and place them next to your recycling container on your regular recycling day.
Donations and Reuse:
Gently used artificial trees can be donated through the NYC Stuff Exchange to find a new home.
Curbside Yard Waste and Wood Removal:
Residents of the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island can receive free curbside removal of yard waste and bundled wood. In Brooklyn and Queens, an appointment is required to dispose of tree trimmings, firewood, and other wood debris. The city chips wood in these areas to help control the spread of the Asian Longhorned Beetle.
Outside of Special Collection Dates:
After the collection period ends, real Christmas trees are collected as garbage. Artificial trees that are not primarily made of metal or rigid plastic should also be discarded with regular trash.
