With the holidays fading into the past, it’s time to dispose of your Christmas tree. New York City offers several options for these seasonal items, both fresh and faux.
- From Monday, January 4, 2016, through Friday, January 15, 2016, weather permitting, the New York Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will collect and compost clean Christmas trees left at the curb. The trees are chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for the city’s parks, institutions, and community gardens. Trees that are not clean will be collected as garbage.
- Artificial trees can be recycled. Remove ornaments, and place the tree beside your recycling container on regular recycling days.
- Donations and reuse. Gently used artificial trees can find new homes via NYC Stuff Exchange.
- Curbside removal. Free curbside removal of yard waste and bundled wood is available for residents of the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Brooklyn and Queens residents must schedule an appointment with the city to discard tree prunings, firewood, and other organic and wood debris. The city chips the wood in these areas to control the population of the Asian Longhorned Beetle.
Outside of the above dates, Christmas trees are collected as garbage. Discard fake trees that are not mostly metal or rigid plastic with regular trash.
