When New Jersey updated its building codes in the second half of 2015, one code was conspicuously untouched: the plumbing code. For more than three months following the adoption of the 2015 International Building Codes, New Jersey continued to operate solely under the 2009 National Standard Plumbing Code.
Garden State adopts 2016 Plumbing Code
As of Monday, January 4, New Jersey has adopted the 2016 National Standard Plumbing Code. This move does not affect compliance deadlines for the previously adopted codes; instead, it brings its own six-month grace period. However, the July 4 holiday actually gives applicants an extra day, as July 5 marks the official date when all applications must conform to the new code.
March 21 deadline approaches
The grace period for all other codes in the Garden State will end soon: March 21. Applications submitted to any New Jersey municipality during this time may comply with either the previous codes or the new codes. After this deadline, every application must comply with the updated codes, as listed below:
- 2015 International Building Code
- 2014 National Electrical Code
- 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (for Residential Only)
- ASHRAE 90.1 – 2013
- 2015 International Mechanical Code
- 2015 International Fuel Gas Code
- 2015 International Residential Code (for 1 or 2 Family Dwellings)
- ICC/ANSI A117.1 – 2009 (Barrier Free Subcode)
