The regulations for Quick-Disconnect Devices first appeared in New York City’s Buildings Bulletin 2010-023. The new 2014 Building Codes superseded those regulations, but the requirements remain the same.
The New York City Fuel Gas Code defines a Quick-Disconnect Device as a hand-operated device that provides a means for connecting and disconnecting an appliance or an appliance connector to a gas supply, automatically shutting off the gas supply when the device is disconnected.
Quick-disconnect devices are permitted as gas outlets if the devices are listed and labeled flush-mounted-type. They must be located and installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction. Quick-disconnects are the only exception for code-required outlet location. All other gas outlet installations are dictated by the code.
These devices must not be the sole connection for appliances or manufactured home installations. In this scenario, a listed and labeled quick-disconnect device must be used in conjunction with a listed and labeled appliance connector.
