NYS Requires CO Detectors in All Commercial Buildings and Restaurants

Effective June 27, 2015, New York State Building Code regulations require all commercial buildings and restaurants to have carbon monoxide (CO) detectors if the building contains devices that may emit CO or has an attached garage. The change comes in part as a response to the February 2014 death of a restaurant manager at a Huntington Station restaurant.

The regulations allow for a one-year transition period, which expires on June 27, 2016. During this period, commercial building owners are encouraged to install CO detection as quickly as practicable. Owners of buildings without CO detectors may submit written statements saying that they are trying in good faith to install the detectors. These installations must be completed by June 27, 2016.

The full text of the new regulations can be found here.
